An immersion grating combines a diffraction grating with a prism (immersion medium). Compared to a non-immersion grating of the same surface dimensions, it can increase the resolution by a factor of 𝑛 (where 𝑛 is the refractive index of the medium), allowing for high spectral resolution while significantly reducing the size and weight of the spectrometer.
