Description

Several areas on the parallel lens surface are fabricated with gratings, which are essentially diffraction gratings. Light is coupled into the lens through these gratings and then propagates inside the lens via total internal reflection. Upon encountering the output grating, the light is diffracted out, thus deflecting and transmitting the light, ultimately delivering the image to the human eye.
